Iarnród Éireann (IE) are the Irish Railway organisation that are responsible for the expansion and replacement of the Irish Rail Network.

The Chief Engineer Infrastructure manages the maintenance and renewal of our railway infrastructure. This infrastructure includes the railway track, the land it is on, bridges, signalling cabins, stations, platforms and anything else which is needed to carry the trains.

Scale Vehicles for Model Railways have been contacted by model rail enthusiasts requesting model vehicles that are liveried or carry logos of the vehicles that are part of the Irish rail network. This page hopefully will expand with different vehicles as demand for them grows and more images of the actual vehicles used become available.

We are currently in the process of prototyping an IE Ford Transit van for the Irish Rail model enthusiasts. Further Irish Rail livery vehicles may appear depending on demand for them.

IE - Scania Flatbed with PalFinger style Crane (Depot/Maintenance) Truck  -  1/72 scale

 

 

 

 

A beauty isn't it? This is a unique Iarnród Éireann IE Irish Rail Flatbed Truck model based upon real trucks used by IE to maintain the Irish rail system.

 

Often Palfinger crane equipment is fitted to these trucks to assist in the loading or loading of heavy materials or equipment.

 

 

 

The Model

This is a one off IE Iarnród Éireann flatbed truck model that we built as a prototype that is now surplus to our requirements and offered in the first instance for sale to our serious model railway enthusiast visitors (before most likely being auctioned onto eBay).

 

As we most of our special vehicles, this vehicle has been stripped down to component parts and a scratch built bed fitted.

A fully pos-able PalFinger crane has been fitted which extends, moves up and down and side to side.

An amber roof light bar has been added and numerous other modifications to make this a truly desirable IE Maintenance truck to own on a model railway layout.

 

Built on a rare 1/72 scale model, this is probably the closest scale rigid chassis truck to the Hornby & Bachmann model railway 1/76 scale and so offers great realism in the authentic Iarnród Éireann IE livery, especially parked next to the 1/72 scale IE Transit Mess vans we build and sell.

 

There you have it, something totally different for the Irish model railway enthusiast and would especially look good as a feature in its own right beside the tracks being maintained or at a depot.

 

As mentioned before, this model is based upon a rare 1/72 which in itself is hard to find which added to the cost of the crane and the amount of work that has gone into converting the base model into the vehicle it is today, it has been quite consuming and therefore this model has to be targeted at truly the model railway enthusiast or exhibition layout owner.

 

 

Based upon the dimensions given on the Scania website this cab is actually is 2430mm so 8.019 feet wide, which if you multiply by 4 (4mm = 1 foot OO scale) that is 32.076 and compared to the actual model cab width which is 31.2mm wide, it is just 0.8mm difference!

• Iarnród Éireann logo on the bonet and off side rear door.

• 'Transit' logo on side front doors and rear near side door, Ford badge on off-side door.

This is a code 3 model, modified and finished to a high standard with a detailed interior, side mirrors, highly detailed wheels, 'Transit' logo on side doors, windscreen wipers, clear glass head lamps and rear lights etc.

These vehicles would be used by the Iarnród Éireann to transport maintenance staff and crew around the depots and various locations within the Irish Railway system.

Iarnród Éireann (IE) Mercedes Econic Flatbed Truck - 1/76 Scale

This is a code 3 die cast metal model, modified and finished to a high standard.

The model is finished with a detailed interior, side mirrors, highly detailed wheels, realistic front and rear lamps, Mercedes logo, exhaust pipe etc.

The model has been dismantled entirely and re-built with a modified flat bed body which has been re-sprayed in a very realistic aluminium paint finish.

As is becoming more popular in many track maintenance vehicles, the body is self contained within the chassis wheel-arch dimensions without side overhang, as to allow the truck to access confined areas where width is an issue.

Iarnród Éireann use this sort of flatbed truck as work horses in their daily rail operations building and maintaining the Irish rail network.

This model would look great anywhere on your Irish modern image layout, in the depot, next to the tracks, locomotives, rolling stock or just on the road.

Just for general interest we have included below some images of the highly collectable Irish Rail Network CIE model railway locomotives and rolling stock that were available back in the 1970's and early 1980's from Hornby & Lima.

We also have a few Lima CIE wagons and a brake van that we will put images online in the near future.

At the moment the images are 'studio' style taken shots, but as soon as we get our demonstration layout back in action again we will re-take them with more realistic surroundings.
